Masonboro Inlet fishes differently than most Carolina spots because the deep channel cuts close to the beach and creates reliable structure year-round. Spring run striped bass push through the inlet mouth and along the ICW shoals, often mixed with early bluefish that arrive in waves through April and May. Fluke stack up in the inlet throat and inner sloughs from late spring through summer, then black sea bass and tautog take over the jetty rocks as water cools in fall. Weakfish show unpredictably but late spring nights in the inlet are your best shot. Kingfish own the surf from late spring into early fall, especially after storms kick up the bottom.

Work the tide hard here because the inlet current does most of your work. Incoming tide pushes bait into the inlet and concentrates flounder on the downcurrent edges of the channel drop — a four-inch white or chartreuse Gulp on a quarter-ounce jig dragged slowly is tough to beat. Bluefish and stripers respond to fast-retrieved metals and poppers when baitfish are pushed to the surface by current seams. For surf kingfish, a small bottom rig with fresh bloodworms or sand fleas fished in the trough behind the first sandbar does consistent work. Cooler water below 55 degrees moves the bite toward tautog on the jetty rocks — green crab is the right bait, and patience matters more than distance.
