Bogue Inlet, NC fishing report

Bogue Inlet fishes differently through the seasons than most Carolina inlets because of how the sound behind it connects to the ICW and the broad shallow flats of Bogue Sound. Striped bass push through in late fall and early spring, staging in the deeper inlet cuts before moving toward the sound. Fluke are the bread-and-butter summer target, especially along the sandbars flanking the channel. Bluefish show up in late spring and again in fall, sometimes blitzing the surf hard enough to scatter bait into the wash. Black sea bass and tautog hold on the nearshore structure and jetty rock through the cooler months. Weakfish are present but inconsistent, usually picking up after dark in the sound. Kingfish own the surf from late spring through summer.

Work the outgoing tide hard in the inlet — that current sweeping bait out of the sound is when the fish really turn on. Fluke stack on the down-current edge of the channel bars, so drag a bucktail tipped with a Gulp or a strip of belly meat along the bottom and let the tide do the work. The surf kingfish bite best when you get a light southeast breeze pushing clean water in; fresh sand fleas or small pieces of shrimp fished right in the trough just inside the break are your best bet. For stripers and weakfish at night in the sound, slow-roll soft plastics along the edge of the grass flats where the bottom drops off. Cold water below about 55 degrees moves the flounder and weakfish off, so pay attention to the thermometer before rigging up.
