Topsail Beach sits on a thin barrier island with a productive ocean surf, a long pier reaching deeper water, and a sheltered sound loaded with structure — each zone fishes differently through the year. Winter and early spring bring tautog working the pier pilings and nearshore rubble, and as water temperatures climb through the 50s, striped bass move through on their coastal migration. By late spring the bluefish arrive in force, followed by a long summer of fluke dominating the sound shallows and kingfish running the surf troughs. Weakfish show best at dawn in the sound during warmer months, and fall brings another bluefish push plus the first black sea bass action on the pier.

In the surf, focus on the cuts and troughs that form between sandbars — kingfish and pompano concentrate there, especially on an incoming tide with a light onshore wind that stirs the baitfish. For fluke in the sound, drift live mud minnows or finger mullet near channel edges and grass bed drop-offs; the bite turns on fastest when water temps hold between 68 and 75 degrees. Bluefish on the pier want fast-retrieved metal spoons or cut mullet, while tautog need slow-fished green crab or fiddler crabs right at the pilings. Watch water clarity — the first clear day after a blow is almost always better than fishing through muddy post-storm surge.
