Bogue Inlet and the lower White Oak River fish year-round, but the patterns shift dramatically with water temperature. Spring brings speckled trout into the shallower grass flats and creek mouths as water climbs into the mid-60s, and red drum follow baitfish into the back-marsh cuts and oyster edges by late spring. Summer flounder stack up in the deeper channel edges and inlet mouth where current concentrates their meals. Come fall, all three species overlap — often in the same areas — which makes September through November some of the most productive fishing this estuary offers. Winter pushes specks and drum into deeper holes in the river, where they slow down but can still be caught.

Work the tide hard here — moving water is everything. On the incoming tide, fish push onto the flats and marsh edges to feed, so position yourself at the edges and work toward structure. On the outgoing, baitfish funnel out of creeks and specks and drum set up at ambush points near channel drops. For flounder in the inlet, slow-drift live mud minnows or finger mullet along the bottom structure. For trout, a quarter-ounce jighead with a paddle-tail soft plastic in natural colors works well over grass in low-light conditions. Red drum in the back marshes will eat cut mullet or crab fished near oyster beds. When wind pushes water out of the sound and clarity drops, slow down and downsize.
