Atlantic Beach sits at the heart of the Crystal Coast, where Bogue Sound meets Beaufort Inlet, and the mix of inshore shallows, inlet structure, and nearshore ledges keeps something biting year-round. Spring brings striped bass working the inlet and sound edges on the run-out tide, while weakfish show up in the sound grass beds from late spring through early summer. Fluke move into the inlet and nearshore shoals as water warms into the sixties, staying active through summer. Bluefish school up in fall, slashing through baitfish along the beaches and inlet mouth. Winter belongs to tautog on nearshore rock piles and black sea bass on structure, with kingfish making good surf catches whenever the water stays mild.

Read the tides carefully here — falling water pushes baitfish out of Bogue Sound through the inlet, stacking stripers and blues at the mouth where structure breaks current. For fluke, drift the inlet channel edges and shoal drop-offs with live mud minnows or small bucktail jigs tipped with Gulp. Tautog and black sea bass respond to green crab or fiddlers fished tight to bottom structure on calm days with minimal drift. Weakfish prefer low-light periods in moderate current over sandy grass-bottom shallows — soft plastic shrimp imitations work well. Water temperature under fifty degrees signals the shift to winter species and slower, more deliberate bottom presentations. Northeast wind muddies the surf and kills visibility, so target those days inside the sound or wait for southwest winds to clear the water.
