Beaufort Inlet and the surrounding marshes offer year-round action, but the fishing shifts noticeably with the seasons. Spring and early summer bring flounder staging near the inlet mouth and channel edges as water temperatures climb through the mid-60s. Red drum are present most of the year, but fall is prime, when big bulls push through the inlet and school up in the surf zone just outside. Speckled trout dominate the back-marsh creeks and grass flat edges from late summer through early winter, peaking when night temperatures start dropping. False albacore are a late-summer and fall highlight, making blistering runs through the inlet and along the beach front when pogies and glass minnows pile up.

On moving water, fish hold predictably — flounder stack on hard bottom transitions where shell and sand meet, especially on points flanking the main channel. Work them with live mud minnows or finger mullet on a Carolina rig, or drag a root-beer paddle tail slowly across the bottom. Reds respond well to cut mullet on the bottom in marsh creek bends, or topwaters along spartina edges during low-light conditions. Speckled trout hit suspending twitch baits worked erratically over shallow grass on a slow incoming tide. For false albacore, match the hatch with small silver Clarkspoons or epoxy jigs and target birds working the surface on outgoing tides near the inlet mouth.
