The Cape Fear River and its nearshore waters fish differently than most Mid-Atlantic spots because of that tannic, fast-moving river current mixing with saltwater. Striped bass push upriver in cooler months, staging near bridge pilings and deep channel bends as water temperatures drop into the 50s. Summer belongs to fluke drifting the nearshore ledges and inlet mouths, while bluefish roam the surface from spring through fall. Black sea bass and tautog work the nearshore structure and rock piles through cooler seasons. Weakfish appear sporadically in spring and fall, especially in the lower river, and kingfish run the surf and nearshore shallows during warmer months.

Tide movement is everything here — fish the last two hours of outgoing through the first hour of incoming for most species, when current concentrates baitfish at channel edges and structure transitions. For fluke, slow-drift Carolina rigs with Gulp or fresh cut bait along sandy bottom transitions just outside the inlet. Stripers respond well to bucktails and swimbaits worked along deep current seams near pilings. Bluefish will hit anything flashy trolled or cast on a fast retrieve. Tautog and black sea bass demand bottom rigs with fiddler or green crabs worked right on the structure. Watch water temperature closely — fish activity drops sharply during rapid temperature swings following heavy rain or strong northwest winds.
