Perdido Pass and the nearshore Gulf reefs around Orange Beach fish best when you understand the seasonal rotation. Bluefish show up in serious numbers during spring and fall migrations, often pushing bait balls right through the pass itself. Striped bass are caught in the pass and along the beach during cooler months when water temps drop into the low 60s and below. Summer brings flounder stacking on the grass and sand transitions inside the pass, while black sea bass dominate the nearshore artificial reefs from late spring through fall. Kingfish run the surf and nearshore zones in warmer months. Weakfish and tautog are less common here than further up the Atlantic coast but do appear, tautog especially around hard structure in cooler water.

Work the pass on outgoing tides when bait flushes out — that current seam is where stripers and bluefish ambush. For flounder, slow-drag a live finger mullet or Gulp shrimp along the sandy drop-offs inside the jetties. On the reefs, drop chicken rigs or jigs for black sea bass, targeting the concrete rubble and natural ledges in 40 to 80 feet. Wind from the south stacks warm blue water closer to the beach and pushes baitfish up against structure. When water temps climb above 80 degrees, fish early morning or target deeper reef structure where fish hold cooler. Kingfish respond well to light-tackle bottom rigs with small cut bait right in the surf zone.
