The Mississippi Sound and barrier islands offer a mix of inshore and nearshore action that shifts dramatically through the year. Speckled trout and redfish dominate local conversation, but anglers targeting structure and open-water species find real variety here. Bluefish crash baitfish schools along the island beaches from late spring through fall, while fluke bury into sandy bottom near the barrier island passes during warmer months. Kingfish work the surf zones and shallow sandy flats in summer. Black sea bass and tautog hold tight to the artificial reefs and hard bottom scattered through the Sound, with tautog best in cooler months when they feed most aggressively on crabs and mussels. Weakfish show inconsistently but favor the same grassy edges and sandy drop-offs as speckled trout. Striped bass are genuinely uncommon in these Gulf waters and should not be a primary target here.

Read the tides carefully around the barrier island passes — Horn, Petit Bois, and Ship Island area cuts funnel tremendous bait movement, and fluke, bluefish, and kingfish all stack on the downcurrent side waiting for an easy meal. Incoming tides push cleaner Gulf water and tend to fire feeding activity. When winds blow from the south, visibility improves and artificial lures produce better; northerly winds often muddy inshore water and push fish tighter to structure or deeper. Water temperature crossing 68 degrees in spring activates most species. For fluke, slow-drift belly strips or paddle-tail swimbaits bounced along sandy bottom near pass edges is hard to beat. Bluefish and kingfish respond well to cut mullet or fast-retrieved spoons along the beach fronts.
