The Mississippi Sound is a shallow, brackish estuary, and the fish you'll reliably target shift hard with the seasons. Speckled trout and redfish dominate most conversations, but the Sound also holds solid flounder runs, with summer flounder pushing into the shallower grass flats and channel edges from late spring through early fall. Bluefish move through in good numbers during cooler months, blitzing baitfish along the open sound. Black sea bass hold around nearshore structure, though you'll need to push a bit south toward reef systems to target them consistently. Weakfish and kingfish make seasonal appearances, and while true striped bass and tautog aren't resident Sound fish in significant numbers, structure near the barrier islands occasionally surprises you.

Read the Sound by watching water clarity, tidal movement, and temperature first. Flounder stack in ambush along channel drop-offs and shell bottom where current funnels bait — drift live mud minnows or finger mullet along those edges during moving tides, keeping your presentation tight to the bottom. For bluefish, work surface plugs and spoons when you see diving birds or busting bait. Water temperatures below 60 degrees push most shallow species deeper or off the flats entirely, so shift toward nearshore structure then. An outgoing tide draining the grass flats concentrates bait and predators alike at creek mouths and channel intersections — those transitions are almost always your most productive windows.
