Dauphin Island sits at the mouth of Mobile Bay, where warm Gulf water pushes against cooler, productive bay outflow — and that mixing zone drives everything here. Speckled trout and redfish get most of the local attention, but the pass and nearshore Gulf structure hold a solid variety of traveling species. Bluefish show up in fall and occasionally late winter, moving through in aggressive pods. Fluke work the sandy bay-mouth flats from late spring into summer, sitting tight to structure and current edges. Black sea bass and kingfish are reliable nearshore targets once water temps climb into the low 70s. Weakfish and striped bass appear here, though inconsistently, mostly tied to cooler transitional periods in spring and fall. Tautog are uncommon but show on hard bottom during winter.

For flounder, slow-drag a mud minnow or paddle-tail swimbait along shell-bottom transitions in the pass on a moving tide — they stack where current breaks near drop-offs. Bluefish push bait to the surface in open water; watch for diving birds and cover ground with metal spoons or fast-retrieved topwaters. Black sea bass and kingfish respond well to cut squid or live shrimp fished on bottom around nearshore reefs and rocks. An outgoing tide concentrates fish at the pass mouth as baitfish funnel through — this is almost always your most productive window here. In summer, fish early before the Gulf calms and warms; a slight chop and cooler morning temps keep fish feeding longer on the surface and in the shallows.
