Choctawhatchee Bay holds a strong mix of inshore and nearshore species that shift with the seasons. Speckled trout and redfish dominate most local conversations, but anglers who work the bay's deeper channels and the passes find bluefish tearing through baitfish schools from fall into winter, and flounder stacked along drop-offs and grass edges through summer and early fall. Black sea bass show up around hard structure near the passes in cooler months. Weakfish and kingfish move through in spring and fall, often mixed with trout. Striped bass and tautog are rare visitors here and not reliable targets in this Gulf-influenced estuary.

Work the tide changes hard, especially around the East and West Pass mouths where current funnels baitfish and triggers feeding. Outgoing tides push flounder tight to channel edges and shell bottom where soft plastics on quarter-ounce jigheads dragged slowly will draw strikes. Bluefish respond well to fast-retrieved spoons and cut bait near the surface when water temps drop below 70 degrees. In warmer months focus on grass flat edges during the first and last two hours of light. North winds in fall cool the shallow flats quickly and push fish into deeper basin water, so follow the temperature break and watch for nervous water and diving birds.
