The Savannah River mouth and Tybee surf fish hard year-round if you know what to expect. Spring pushes striped bass through the river channel as they follow bait migrations, and bluefish show up slashing through mullet schools along the bars. Summer belongs to fluke drifting the inlet edges and nearshore structure, while black sea bass stack on any hard bottom you can find offshore. Weakfish work the surf and channel margins at night during warmer months. Fall is the most electric season here, with bluefish, stripers, and kingfish all feeding aggressively before the water cools. Tautog move onto jetty rocks and nearshore wrecks once water temperatures drop into the low 60s and hold there through winter.

Read the tides religiously on this water. The Savannah River dumps enormous volumes on the outgoing, flushing bait through the channel edges and along the rip lines that form off the north and south jetties — that moving water concentrates every predator on the list. Fluke want a slow drift with a bucktail tipped with a Gulp or strip bait along the channel drop-offs. Stripers and blues respond to topwaters and swimbaits worked through rip current seams on the last two hours of outgoing tide. Kingfish hit small fish-finder rigs with fresh shrimp or sand fleas in the near-shore surf troughs. Tautog take green crabs bounced tight to jetty rocks. Avoid dirty water after heavy rain — the river runs brown fast and shuts fishing down until clarity returns.
