Beaufort's tidal creeks, grass flats, and sounds fish differently than most Mid-Atlantic estuaries because the water temperature swings hard and the tides run strong. Striped bass move through in fall and again in late winter as water cools, staging along deeper channel edges. Spring and early summer bring weakfish into the grass lines at dusk, and fluke settle onto sandy creek mouths and sound bottoms through summer. Bluefish show unpredictably, often crashing bait on the flats during tide changes. Tautog and black sea bass hold on the nearshore hard structure just offshore. Kingfish work the sandy bottom year-round but are most active in cooler months.

Fish the outgoing tide hard here — falling water pushes bait out of the marshes and concentrates predators at creek mouths and channel drops. For stripers and weakfish, soft plastics on quarter-ounce jigheads worked slowly along grass edges at low light are hard to beat. Fluke want a slow drift with a bucktail tipped with a Gulp or strip bait across sandy transitions. Bluefish hit anything fast near the surface. Watch water temperature closely — once it climbs above 80 degrees, fish deep and early. Light southeast winds keep the flats fishable; hard southwest winds muddy shallow water quickly.
