Spring brings trout onto the flats as water warms into the mid-60s, and they'll stack on the edges of deeper potholes. Summer shifts focus: trout move to deeper grass and channel edges during heat, while reds cruise the shallower flats in loose schools. Summer also opens scallop season, and wading for scallops often puts you right in prime redfish territory. Fall is the sweet spot — cooling water concentrates both reds and trout aggressively feeding before winter. Cold fronts push fish into creeks and deeper cuts.

Read the tides carefully here because the Big Bend has a strong tidal range that moves fish dramatically. On a falling tide, reds push off flooded marsh grass onto the flat edges and funnel through oyster bar drains — position yourself at those choke points. Rising tides let you follow fish back into shallow water under a foot or less. For trout over grass, a popping cork with a live shrimp or a soft plastic paddle tail works consistently; vary the pause until you find the cadence. For reds, weedless gold spoons and DOA shrimp-style soft plastics sight-casted ahead of tailing fish are hard to beat.
