Homosassa's springs and grass flats are built around a handful of core species, and the calendar drives everything. Redfish and spotted seatrout dominate year-round, but winter draws snook tight into the warm spring vents alongside manatees, making them accessible even in cold snaps. Tarpon roll through the flats from late spring into summer, and that's when things get serious. The species list you'd chase on an Atlantic estuary — striped bass, fluke, bluefish, weakfish, tautog, black sea bass, kingfish — simply don't belong here. This is Gulf Coast spring-fed water, and fishing it honestly means targeting the animals that actually live here.

On the flats, moving tides push baitfish and crabs along grassbed edges, and that's where trout and reds set up to ambush. Work popping corks over submerged grass on incoming tide, or free-line live pinfish and pigfish near spring boils in cooler months. Soft plastics on light jig heads — paddletails and shrimp imitations in natural colors — are workhorses. When water temps drop below 60 degrees, fish compress into deeper spring-fed channels and go lethargic; slow down your presentation dramatically. Northeast winds flatten the bays and push fish shallow. Watch for nervous water and mullet jumping — that usually means predators underneath.
