Sitka Sound and the outer coast offer a genuine mixed bag through the season. Kings show first, typically staging near deep nearshore structure during the cooler months before their river push, with the outer coast producing larger fish as summer approaches. Coho arrive mid-to-late summer and run strong into fall, often schooling in the protected bays and kelp edges of the sound itself. Halibut are present year-round in deeper water but become much more accessible and active as water temperatures climb into the high 40s and low 50s Fahrenheit. Rockfish stack on nearly any hard bottom structure and offer consistent action throughout the season, especially useful on slower days.

For kings and coho, fish the tide rips and current seams that form around points and islands — baitfish concentrate there and salmon follow. Herring, either whole or plug-cut, produces reliably for kings at depth; coho often respond well to hoochies and spoons trolled shallower and faster. Halibut favor the mud-sand transition zones off deeper rocky structure, and a circle-hooked herring or octopus bait bounced near bottom on a strong tidal exchange outperforms most other presentations. Avoid flat calm outer coast days with low swell — fish the incoming tide on moderate wind days when there is still enough chop to break up surface light but conditions remain safe offshore.
