Prince William Sound out of Whittier is primarily a Pacific fishery, so you won't find striped bass, fluke, bluefish, black sea bass, tautog, weakfish, or kingfish in these waters — those are Atlantic coast species. What you will find is world-class salmon fishing for king, silver, pink, and chum salmon, along with halibut, rockfish, Dolly Varden, and occasionally lingcod. Kings show first in late spring, silvers peak late summer into fall, and halibut are available throughout the open season. Pinks flood the system in massive numbers during odd years, making for nonstop action near creek mouths and shallow bays.

For halibut, fish deep structure and muddy bottom transitions on the leading edge of an incoming tide, using large herring, octopus, or heavy jigs bounced near bottom. Salmon stack in protected bays and near glacial outflows, especially on tide changes — outgoing tides push baitfish and concentrate fish near points and narrows. Water temperature matters here; cooler, cleaner water away from heavy glacial melt often holds fish better during summer. Wind in PWS can build fast, so plan morning departures and watch for afternoon williwaws funneling through mountain passes.
