Kachemak Bay and the outer Inlet give you a legitimate shot at three very different fisheries depending on the season. King salmon push through the Inlet in late spring and into early summer, staging in the deeper water before heading up river systems, and that window is relatively short — miss it and you're waiting until next year. Halibut are the workhorse fishery here, available from late spring through early fall, with bigger fish showing up in deeper water offshore while smaller "chicken" halibut hang closer to the bay structure. Rockfish — mostly black and yelloweye — stack up on rocky pinnacles and steep drop-offs year-round and offer consistent action when other fishing slows.

For halibut, fish the deeper offshore grounds on the outgoing tide when current carries scent and keeps bait near bottom without excessive drift; circle hooks with whole herring or large octopus pieces outfish most artificial options. Kings respond well to trolled herring or spoons worked at depth with downriggers along current seams where tidal flow meets calmer water. Rockfish are dead simple — drop a jig or baited hook to the bottom on any rocky structure and work it slowly. Watch your water temperature closely; halibut feed more aggressively in the 46 to 52 degree range, and a hard southeast wind will blow the bay out fast, turning the water murky and pushing fish off their patterns. Calm, clear mornings on a moderate outgoing tide consistently produce the best action here.
