Ketchikan sits at the crossroads of the Inside Passage and open Pacific, giving anglers a rare shot at multiple fisheries in a single day. Kings push into the straits and tidal rips first, typically arriving in late spring, with the bigger ocean-bright fish caught along the outer coast before they stage near creek mouths. Silvers follow in midsummer through early fall, often boiling right at the surface in protected inlets and feeding heavily on baitfish pushed against kelp lines. Halibut are available most of the season across both inside and outside grounds, with the largest fish generally found in deeper outside water.

Tide movement is everything here. Halibut stack on the upcurrent side of rocky points and underwater shelves where tidal flow concentrates needlefish and herring, so dropping large cut plug herring or rubber swimbaits straight down on a moving tide outperforms slack water almost every time. For kings, troll brined herring in a slow roll at depth near structure on incoming tides. Silvers come up aggressive on anchovy-pattern spoons or surface poppers when water temperatures dip into the mid-fifties and bait is visibly breaking the surface. Avoid dead-calm, flat-light conditions on the outer coast, and watch for diving birds to mark the schools.
