Sheepshead Bay sits at the gateway to Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic, giving you access to a remarkable range of species as the seasons rotate. Spring pushes striped bass through the bay's channels and bridge pilings, often with bluefish hot on their heels by late spring into summer. Fluke arrive when water temperatures climb into the low 60s and concentrate along the sandy flats and channel edges inside Jamaica Bay and just outside the inlets. Black sea bass show on the nearshore wrecks and hard structure offshore. Tautog anchor to the same rocky structure in fall and early spring when most other species have moved on. Weakfish and kingfish appear as warm-season bonuses in the bay's calmer back areas.

Work the falling tide at the inlet mouths where baitfish funnel through — stripers and blues stack up to ambush there, and bucktails or swimming plugs in the four to six inch range are hard to beat. For fluke inside the bay, drift the channel edges with a Gulp on a simple high-low rig and keep your drift slower than you think you need to by adjusting weight to current. Northeast wind generally muddies Jamaica Bay and kills the bite fast, so prioritize calm or southwest conditions. Once surface temps push into the low 70s, fluke bite best on the ocean side while the bay holds weakfish and kingfish on small hooks baited with bloodworms or sand eels near grassy shallows.
