Jamaica Bay, NY fishing report

Jamaica Bay fishes differently than open coast water — it's a protected estuary, and that shapes everything. Striped bass push into the bay in spring and linger through fall, hunting bunker and spearing along the marsh edges and deeper channels near the inlets. Bluefish arrive close behind, often tearing up the surface over the flats on moving tides. Fluke move in once the water climbs into the mid-60s and settle into the sandy channel edges and drop-offs. Weakfish have thinned in recent years but still show occasionally in the back marsh on calm summer nights. Tautog and black sea bass hug the rock and structure near the inlet mouths, peaking in spring and fall. Kingfish run the sandy shallows all summer.

Fish the tide hard here — Jamaica Bay's shallow flats produce best on the first two hours of an incoming tide as fish push up to feed over warming sand and grass edges, then fall back to channel lips on the drop. Stripers and blues respond to bucktails, soft plastics, and topwaters worked along marsh creek mouths, especially early and late in low-light conditions. Fluke want a moving drift with bucktails tipped with Gulp or fresh squid along channel edges in eight to fifteen feet. For tautog near inlet rock piles, green crab fished tight to structure on a short, stiff leader outproduces everything. Wind matters — a hard southwest pushes dirty water in and shuts down the flats fast, so pick calmer windows when visibility holds.
