Shark River fishes best when you understand how each species moves through the system. Striped bass show up in spring and fall, staging in the inlet and basin before pushing up the tidal river on strong ebb and flood tides. Bluefish arrive by late spring and can blow through the inlet in frenzied schools. Summer brings fluke scattered across the basin flats and channel edges, while black sea bass hold on the rockier structure near the inlet mouth. Tautog work the same rocky areas in spring and fall when water cools below 60 degrees. Weakfish ghost through on summer nights, and kingfish run tight to the surf-side beaches and inlet edges from midsummer through early fall.

Work the outgoing tide hard here because it concentrates bait along channel drop-offs and around the bridge pilings inside the basin. Stripers and weakfish stack up in eddies behind structure right after the tide turns. Bucktails tipped with Gulp or a curly-tail grub cover ground efficiently for fluke along the basin edges. Fresh clam and bloodworm on a fish-finder rig catches kingfish right on the bottom near the inlet. For bluefish and bass, poppers and metal casting lures produce when bait is visibly getting chased. When water temperatures drop into the mid-50s, slow down for tautog with green crab on a knocker rig right on the rocks. Wind pushing out of the northwest typically clears the water and sharpens the bite.
