Bay Head sits where the open Atlantic surf meets the upper reach of Barnegat Bay, giving you two distinct fisheries within walking distance of each other. Spring brings the first striped bass push through the inlet and along the beachfront as water temps climb through the low 50s, followed by weakfish ghosting the bay flats in late spring — a run that's been leaner in recent years but still worth chasing on calm evenings. Summer flounder work both the surf trough and the bay channel edges, while bluefish crash baitballs anywhere from the wash to open bay water. Tautog hold on any hard structure through fall and into early winter, and black sea bass concentrate around the same rocky bottom. Kingfish are a summer surf staple often overlooked by anglers chasing bigger species.

In the surf, read the sandbars carefully — stripers and weakfish stage in the gut between bar and beach, especially on a dropping tide with northeast wind pushing a light chop. Small metal lipped swimmers and bucktails worked slow and low outperform flashier hardware here. For fluke in the bay, drift sandy channel edges with a bucktail tipped with a gulp or strip bait; current speed matters more than lure size. Once water temps drop into the mid-50s in fall, tog become the priority — find any shell, rock, or debris pile and fish green crab tight to the bottom. Dawn and dusk tidal transitions are almost always your best windows regardless of species.
