Santee Cooper — the paired lakes Marion and Moultrie connected by the Diversion Canal — is best known as a trophy largemouth lake, but the fishery runs deeper than most visitors expect. Largemouth dominate the stumps and grass flats year-round, with the best topwater action coming as water temps climb into the low 60s in late winter and early spring when fish stage shallow before the spawn. Chain pickerel haunt the same cypress-studded shallows and will ambush baits meant for bass. Blue and flathead catfish are legitimate targets in the deeper river channels and around current breaks in the Santee River arms. Crappie and bluegill are abundant in the stump fields, peaking in spring and again in fall. Walleye and true trout are not native to this system, so anglers should redirect those expectations toward the species that actually thrive here.

Work water temperature as your primary seasonal clock — largemouth push shallow when temps hit the low 60s and pull back to deeper stump lines and channel edges once summer heat pushes surface temps into the upper 80s. In summer, fish the shaded cypress stump bases at first light with weedless frogs or soft-plastic creature baits, then follow the fish down to deeper structure with Carolina rigs and big swimbaits as the sun climbs. Pickerel react well to fast-moving spinnerbaits burned just above the grass. Catfish stack in river channel bends where current slows; cut shad fished on the bottom after dark is hard to beat. Crappie suspend tight to standing timber — vertical jigging small tube jigs or live minnows around visible stumps and submerged trees produces consistently from late winter through spring.
