Ponce Inlet fishes differently than most Florida spots because the Halifax and Tomoka river systems funnel baitfish and cooler water through a deep, tidal channel that attracts species you rarely find this far south. Bluefish and weakfish work the rips year-round, with bluefish peaking in fall and spring when they chase mullet through the cut. Fluke move into the inlet and nearshore shoals in summer, holding over sandy bottom transitions. Black sea bass and tautog haunt the jetty rocks through the cooler months, while kingfish run the surf from late summer into fall. Striped bass show up on the coldest winter nights, a bonus for patient anglers willing to fish after dark.

For the jetty and inlet, work the seam where fast current meets slack water — that edge holds fish. Tautog and black sea bass want fiddler crabs or green crabs bounced tight to the rocks; losing tackle means you're in the right place. Fluke respond to bucktail jigs tipped with a Gulp strip dragged along sandy bottom on the outgoing tide. Bluefish and weakfish crash topwater plugs and metal spoons in moving current; stick to the last two hours of outgoing and first two hours of incoming. In the surf, use fresh sand fleas and bloodworms on fish-finder rigs for kingfish, working the troughs parallel to the beach. Dropping water temperatures below 60°F push most species tighter to the inlet and off the surf.
