The Halifax River is a tidal estuary, not open coast, so expect an inshore mix rather than a striped bass or tautog fishery — those species don't reliably show here. What you will find are redfish, flounder including summer flounder that push into the river through warmer months, bluefish that make seasonal runs through the inlet and along the surf, kingfish working the sandy surf bottom year-round with peaks in spring and fall, weakfish staging around structure during cooler months, and black sea bass holding on nearshore hard bottom just offshore. Surf fishing picks up significantly in fall as baitfish migrations concentrate predators along the beach.

On the river, work deeper channel edges and dock pilings on outgoing tide when baitfish flush out of grass flats — that's when flounder and weakfish ambush feeding lanes. In the surf, kingfish hit best on fresh shrimp or sand fleas right in the wash during incoming tide on lower-wind mornings when the water runs clearer. For bluefish, cast metal spoons or fast-retrieved plugs near the inlet mouth. Water temperature below 65 degrees slows the flat's flounder bite considerably, so cold fronts push action toward deeper river structure rather than shallow grass edges.
