The Banana River lagoon and Cocoa Beach surf fish quite differently from northeastern inlets, so the target mix surprises some visitors. Redfish, snook, and seatrout dominate the lagoon through the warmer months, but the surf and nearshore Atlantic side draws a legitimate mix of migratory species. Bluefish push through in fall and again briefly in spring, often showing right in the wash. Weakfish show up in cooler months along grassy lagoon edges and nearshore structure. Kingfish run the surf reliably in fall. Black sea bass and fluke work the nearshore reefs in summer, while tautog hold on that same hard bottom in winter. Striped bass are rare this far south but occasionally follow bait schools through in the coldest months.

Read the tides carefully — moving water, especially an outgoing tide flushing bait from the lagoon through the inlets, concentrates everything from bluefish to weakfish near the mouth. For surf kingfish, fish the trough closest to shore with fresh shrimp or sand fleas on a bottom rig during a moderate northeast wind that stirs the water slightly. Fluke and black sea bass on nearshore ledges respond well to bucktail jigs tipped with cut squid, worked slowly near bottom. In the lagoon, water temperature below 65 degrees pushes snook and trout deep to grass edges and dock pilings, where slow-sinking lures or live shrimp under a popping cork consistently outperform fast retrieves.
