Lake Martin is a classic Alabama reservoir where largemouth bass dominate the conversation, but the fishery runs deeper than most visitors expect. Largemouth stack on points and dock pilings from late winter through fall, while spotted bass — often mistaken for smallmouth in this region — hold on deeper structure mid-lake. True smallmouth are rare here, and walleye and chain pickerel are not established populations worth targeting. What Lake Martin does deliver is exceptional crappie and bream action in the coves, especially around flooded timber and dock shade, and blue and channel catfish run heavy through the main river channel cuts.

For bass, work isolated docks with shade first — a shaky head or drop shot finesse rig excels when water temperatures push above 80 degrees and fish go lethargic. In spring, when water temperatures climb through the mid-60s, target shallow coves with spawning flats using soft plastics and topwaters early morning. Crappie anglers should push jigs or minnows tight to submerged timber and dock posts, especially during the spring spawn push into warmer cove pockets. For catfish, cut bait fished on bottom near the creek channel bends after dark produces consistently through summer. Read water clarity and temperature together — stained, cooler cove water after rain often concentrates active bass.
