Lake Lanier is a deep, clear highland reservoir on the upper Chattahoochee, and that clarity shapes everything. Spotted bass dominate the mid-lake structure year-round, while largemouth push shallower into creek arm pockets during spring prespawn and again in fall. Striped bass are the big draw — Lanier's open-water stripers school aggressively and chase threadfin and gizzard shad on the main lake, peaking in spring and again when surface temps drop into the low 60s in fall. Crappie stack on submerged timber and dock pilings in the creek arms, most reliably in spring and late fall when they move shallow to feed.

For spots and largemouth, finesse tactics earn bites in Lanier's gin-clear water — drop shots, shaky heads, and small swimbaits fished on main-lake points and humps in 15 to 30 feet cover most situations. When surface temps push above 80 degrees in summer, fish go deep and the bite tightens; a swimbait or umbrella rig worked over submerged creek channels finds both bass and roaming stripers. Live shad under a balloon or heavy jigging spoons worked vertically over baitfish schools on the graph are the most consistent striper producers. For crappie, small tube jigs or live minnows around dock posts in 8 to 15 feet are reliable whenever you find fish stacked on the graph.
