Lake Guntersville is one of the Tennessee River's finest largemouth bass fisheries, and that reputation is well earned. Largemouth thrive in the sprawling grass beds and flooded timber that define this reservoir, and they follow predictable seasonal swings — moving shallow onto hydrilla and milfoil flats to spawn in spring, retreating to deeper grass edges and channel swings as summer heats the shallows, then pushing back shallow in fall when water cools. Crappie stack on submerged brush and dock pilings year-round, with spring spawning runs pulling them very shallow. Catfish — both channel and blue — use the main river channel and deep creek mouths, especially in warmer months.

For largemouth, work the outside edges of grass beds with a punch rig or frog in summer and a swimbait or spinnerbait along emerging grass in spring. Crappie respond well to small tube jigs and live minnows fished vertically around structure. Watch water temperature closely — largemouth become most active when surface temps sit between 58 and 72 degrees, and low-light periods in summer are critical. Catfish reward patience with cut shad fished on the bottom near channel ledges. When the river is pulling good flow, target eddies and slack water behind points where baitfish and fish concentrate naturally.
