Cave Run Lake in eastern Kentucky is one of the finest muskellunge fisheries in the Southeast, drawing dedicated muskie hunters alongside bass and crappie anglers year-round. Spring brings all three species shallow as water temperatures climb through the 50s and 60s — crappie push into coves and flooded timber to spawn, largemouth stack along rocky points and transition banks, and muskies cruise shallow flats and creek arms after their own spawn. Summer heat pushes fish deeper or into shaded structure, while fall triggers aggressive feeding as temperatures drop and forage concentrates near creek channel mouths and submerged timber edges.

For muskies, work large bucktails and glide baits along weed edges and rocky shoreline transitions during low-light periods, burning through likely water and varying your retrieve. Largemouth respond well to Texas-rigged soft plastics and jigs worked along bluff walls and laydown timber, especially where depth changes abruptly. Crappie hold tight to standing timber and submerged brush — vertical jigging small tube jigs or live minnows under a slip float in 10 to 18 feet produces consistently outside the spawn.
