Dale Hollow is one of the clearest, coldest, deepest impoundments in the mid-South, and that character shapes everything. The lake is best known for producing trophy smallmouth bass, with fish growing large and fat in the cool, deep, clear water. Smallmouth are the primary draw for most serious anglers, but walleye quietly thrive here too, particularly in spring and early winter. Spring brings smallmouth shallow to rocky points and gravel banks as water temps climb toward 60 degrees. Summer pushes both species deep into the thermocline. Fall pulls smallmouth back to the mid-depth range, and winter concentrates walleye on main-lake structure.

For smallmouth, target rocky main-lake points and bluff ends with tube baits, drop-shots, or suspending jerkbaits. Depth-find the thermocline in summer, then work just above it. Walleye respond well to slow-rolled swimbaits and live minnows drifted along sloping main-channel banks, especially in low-light periods. Clear water demands lighter line and natural color finesse presentations year-round. Watch your graph for baitfish schools, particularly shad, since smallmouth and walleye stack beneath them. When surface temps cool into the mid-50s, both species become more aggressive and shallower, making fall and early spring your most productive windows.
