York River, VA fishing report

The York River fishes differently than open Bay water — the tidal current here is aggressive, and species move in and out with the seasons rather than staging offshore. Striped bass push into the river in fall and hold through winter, especially near the Coleman Bridge pilings and deeper channel bends. Spring brings weakfish into the shallower tributary mouths before water temperatures climb. Summer is prime time for fluke across the grass flats near the river's edges, bluefish slashing through baitfish schools mid-river, and black sea bass hanging tight to any hard structure. Tautog work the pilings year-round, and kingfish show up on sandy bottom during warmer months.

Work the pilings on a moving tide — tautog want fiddler crabs or green crab fished right against the structure, while stripers respond to bucktails and soft plastics drifted through the current seam. For fluke, drag gulp-style baits or spearing-tipped jigs along the flat edges where bottom transitions from grass to sand. Weakfish prefer lower-light periods and quieter current phases, so dawn tides on calmer days are worth targeting. Watch water temperature — fluke action drops off noticeably once surface temps push into the low 80s. An outgoing tide that pulls bait off the flats into deeper cuts concentrates almost everything that feeds here.
