James River, VA fishing report

The tidal James runs a real mixed bag depending on the season. Striped bass are the anchor species, present nearly year-round but most aggressive during spring and fall migrations when cooler water pushes baitfish against the pilings and seawall structure around the lower river. Bluefish show up in warmer months slashing through bunker schools on the open flats. Fluke settle into sandy bottom transitions and channel edges from late spring through summer, while black sea bass and tautog work the harder structure — bridge pilings, riprap, and submerged debris. Weakfish and kingfish are more seasonal visitors, typically showing during warmer months in shallower, softer-bottom areas near grass and sand flats.

Current is your most important variable on this tidal river. Stripers and bluefish feed aggressively on moving water, particularly the last two hours of outgoing tide when baitfish get flushed past pilings and points. Work soft plastic swimbaits and bucktails on a slow drag along current seams for stripers, or run topwaters and metal spoons through bluefish blitzes on the flats. Fluke want a slow drift with a bucktail tipped with a Gulp or strip bait along sandy channel edges. Tautog and black sea bass respond to green crab or fiddler crabs bounced tight to structure. When water temperatures drop below 55 degrees, slow everything down considerably.
