South Padre Island, TX fishing report

The Lower Laguna Madre is one of the shallowest, clearest, most productive estuaries on the Texas Gulf Coast, built around speckled trout, redfish, and flounder as your bread-and-butter targets. Fluke, or summer flounder, move into the system in good numbers when water temps climb through late spring and summer, ambushing prey along drop-offs and shell pads. Kingfish run the nearshore Gulf surf year-round but concentrate heavily in spring and fall. Bluefish show unpredictably, usually in cooler months, tearing up baitfish schools near passes. Weakfish appear as occasional fall and winter guests in the deeper channels. Tautog and black sea bass are not native residents here, and striped bass are largely absent from this subtropical water, so chasing those species will mean a very long run north.

Work the Laguna's skinny backwater flats at moving tides, especially the first two hours of an incoming tide pushing clean, warmer water over turtle grass. Flounder stack on the hard edges where grass meets sand; drag a soft-plastic paddle tail or live piggy perch slowly along those transitions. For surf kingfish, small cut bait on a simple bottom rig fished in the first trough beyond the breakers produces well. Avoid fishing when southeast winds muddy the flats and water temps drop below the mid-50s Fahrenheit, as trout and flounder become lethargic and move deep into main channels. Clear green water and a steady breeze under 15 knots makes for the best wading days.
