Padre Island's surf and Laguna Madre offer a rotating cast of species tied closely to water temperature and seasonal baitfish movement. Redfish and speckled trout dominate most conversations, but the beachfront guts also hold pompano, whiting, and kingfish year-round, with Spanish mackerel and jack crevalle pushing through on warmer months. Bluefish show up seasonally along the surf during baitfish migrations, and flounder — what many call fluke further north — stage in the sloughs and at Laguna passes, especially in fall when they move toward the Gulf to spawn. Black sea bass, tautog, weakfish, and striped bass are genuinely rare to absent in this South Texas water; anglers targeting those should know they're fishing well outside those species' core range.
