Shinnecock Inlet is one of Long Island's most productive pieces of water precisely because it connects open ocean to a protected bay. Spring pushes the first striped bass through as water temperatures climb into the mid-50s, with fish staging in the rips right at the inlet mouth. Fluke arrive shortly after and dominate summer, spreading through the canal and along the ocean front just outside the jetties. Bluefish show up in waves throughout summer and fall, often blitzing baitfish on the surface. Tautog hold on the jetty rocks year-round but bite best in cooler water, spring and fall especially. Weakfish appear unpredictably, typically after dark in warm months. Kingfish work the sandy ocean-side cuts in summer. Black sea bass push into structure as water warms.

Fish the outgoing tide through the inlet for stripers and blues — that current pushes bait out and predators stack up in the wash. For fluke, work the deep channel edges of the canal with bucktail jigs tipped with Gulp or a strip of squid, drifting with the tide. On the jetty rocks, green crabs on bottom catch tautog consistently. Water temperature dropping below 55 degrees signals the fall striper push; north or northwest winds after a cold front often put bass tight to the jetty faces. Watch for birds and nervous water outside the inlet mouth — when bait gets pushed against the beach by wind and current, that's where the blitzes happen.
