Greenport sits at the heart of some of the most productive mixed-species fishing on Long Island's East End. Spring brings the first striped bass pushing through the North Fork's rocky points and tidal rips as water temps climb through the 50s, with weakfish showing up in the Peconics not long after — a species worth targeting here since this bay system holds one of their last reliable strongholds. Summer fluke dominate the shallow sand flats and channel edges of Peconic Bay, while bluefish churn the surface almost anywhere bait is present. By late summer, black sea bass stack on any hard structure you can find. Fall is prime time, with big stripers migrating through and tautog — locally called tog — settling hard onto rock piles and mussel beds as the water cools.

For fluke, drift sandy bottom with bucktails tipped with Gulp or fresh squid strip, targeting the transitions between the channel edges and the flats — the Peconic system has plenty of these ambush zones. Tautog and black sea bass want crabs and jigs fished tight to rock structure; don't waste time drifting open sand for them. Stripers respond well to swimming plugs and soft plastics worked through the rips and current seams that form off the North Fork's points on a strong moving tide. Wind matters here — an easterly wind pushes bait into sheltered western pockets, concentrating feeding fish. Water temps dropping through the low 60s in fall signal the best striper action, while the low 50s push fluke and sea bass offshore.
