Lake Sakakawea is a massive Missouri River reservoir running through western North Dakota, and the three species worth chasing here are walleye, smallmouth bass, and landlocked chinook salmon. Walleye dominate the fishing from ice-out through early summer and again in fall, when cooling water pulls them shallow onto rocky points and windswept shorelines. Smallmouth bass concentrate around the many rocky arms and boulder fields during summer warmth. Salmon fishing picks up in colder water, particularly in spring and late fall when they run deeper and relate to the thermocline.

For walleye, target windblown rock piles and points with jig-and-minnow rigs or bottom bouncers trailing spinners tipped with nightcrawlers. Smallmouth respond well to tube jigs and crankbaits worked along chunk rock. Salmon run deep and respond to trolled spoons and stick baits pulled behind planer boards once surface temperatures drop into the low fifties or colder. Watch water temperature closely — walleye and smallmouth move shallow as water warms through the fifties into the sixties, then push to deeper adjacent structure during summer peaks. Read current seams near submerged creek channels, which concentrate baitfish and pull all three species into predictable feeding lanes.
