Fort Peck is a massive Missouri River reservoir in northeastern Montana, and the sheer size of it means you need to think in terms of sections rather than treating it as one body of water. Walleye are the bread-and-butter species here and draw the most attention, running hard in spring as water temperatures climb into the upper 40s and low 50s, then pulling deeper onto main-lake structure through summer heat. Lake trout hold in the deeper, colder basins year-round and become more accessible as surface temps cool in fall. Northern pike dominate the shallower upper arms and backwater bays, most aggressively in spring and again in early fall when they stage near emergent vegetation.

For walleye, work wind-blown points and rocky shoreline transitions with jig-and-minnow combos or bottom-bouncer rigs pulling spinner harnesses — depth often matters more than location, so experiment between 15 and 35 feet until you mark fish on your electronics. Lake trout respond well to jigging heavy spoons or swimbaits vertically over deep structure, particularly where the old river channel cuts through basin floors. Pike will crush large spinnerbaits, flashy spoons, or live suckers fished near weed edges and flooded timber in the upper reservoir arms. Pay attention to water temperature transitions; walleye especially stack near thermoclines during summer, and a good graph will put you on fish faster than covering water blind.
