Conneaut Creek and the harbor fish best in spring and fall when steelhead and brown trout push in from Lake Erie on their spawning runs — that's when you'll find the most action along the lower creek stretches. Walleye move through the harbor and nearshore lake structure in spring and again in fall, following the same temperature-driven migrations. Largemouth hold in the harbor's quieter backwaters and dock edges through summer, while smallmouth favor the rocky lake shoreline and creek mouth. Chain pickerel show up in slower, weedier sections of the lower creek year-round. Channel catfish work the deeper harbor holes at night, and panfish like crappie and bluegill fill in the gaps through warmer months.

Watch water temperature closely — steelhead and browns become most active when creek temps drop into the upper 30s to mid-40s, and fish tend to stack in deeper pools below riffles during low, clear flows. Drift spawn sacks, beads, or small streamers through those seams for trout. For walleye, work the harbor channel edges and lake points at dawn and dusk with jig-and-minnow rigs or shallow-running stick baits. Smallmouth respond well to tube jigs and crawfish imitations bounced along rocky lake structure. When creek flow runs high and stained, switch to brighter attractor patterns and add weight to get down to where fish are holding near bottom out of the current.
