Lake Erie and the Niagara River offer a serious year-round fishery built around walleye, smallmouth bass, and steelhead. Spring walleye runs concentrate near the eastern basin as fish move shallow to spawn, while summer shifts action to deeper structure and the river mouth. Smallmouth dominate Erie's rocky nearshore areas through summer and fall, becoming more aggressive as water cools into October. Steelhead enter the Niagara corridor in fall, run through winter, and peak again in early spring when tributaries warm slightly and fish stack before moving upstream.

For walleye, troll harnesses and stick baits along defined depth breaks, paying close attention to thermocline depth as summer stratifies the water. Smallmouth respond well to tube jigs and drop-shot rigs worked over submerged rock and gravel points. Steelhead in the Niagara hold in current seams behind mid-river boulders and along slack-water edges — drift spawn sacs or beads under a float, or swing streamers through the deeper runs. Watch river flow levels closely, as rising water pushes steelhead tight to softer edges while dropping flows concentrate fish in predictable slots.
