Charlotte Harbor holds a strong year-round fishery, though it looks nothing like a Northeast striper or fluke trip — this is snook, redfish, and spotted seatrout country. If you are arriving from up north expecting striped bass, fluke, bluefish, black sea bass, tautog, weakfish, or kingfish, be aware those species simply are not part of this fishery. What you will find instead changes with the seasons: snook push the shallow grass flats and creek mouths in warmer months, redfish roam the bars and oyster edges year-round, and seatrout concentrate on deeper grass in winter when water temperatures drop into the low 60s and below.

Read the tides carefully here — low outgoing tides push bait and fish out of the creeks and onto adjacent points and bars, which is prime time to work a weedless paddle tail or live shrimp along the current seam. Avoid fishing open flats in hard north winds, which cool and dirty the water fast; instead, duck into protected creek systems where fish stack on any remaining warmth.
