Anna Maria Island sits at the mouth of Tampa Bay where Longboat Pass and Bean Point funnel tidal current across grass flats and sand bottom — and the fish here are Gulf and Bay species, not Northeast Atlantic fish. Snook, redfish, trout, tarpon, flounder, Spanish mackerel, and cobia are what these waters actually produce. Snook stage in the passes through winter, move onto the flats and into the surf as water warms past 70 degrees, then spawn near the passes in summer. Redfish school on the shallow grass flats year-round, while trout favor deeper grass edges in cooler months. Tarpon roll through the passes and along the beach in late spring through summer. Spanish mackerel and cobia follow the warming water inshore each spring.

Fish the passes on a moving tide, either direction, positioning near structure like the rocks and jetty edges where snook and flounder ambush baitfish in the current seam. Live pilchards are the universal bait here — free-lined or under a popping cork for trout and redfish on the flats. DOA shrimp, paddle tails, and gold spoons cover the grass flats effectively. Wind from the east keeps the flats calm and clear, making sight-fishing for reds possible on low tide. A northwest wind muddies the water fast and pushes fish off the shallow grass, so work the deeper edges and pass channels instead. Water temperature below 60 degrees slows snook and trout into a near-dormant state near warm discharge areas and deeper holes.
