Toledo sits at the western basin of Lake Erie, one of the most productive walleye fisheries in North America, and the Maumee River feeding it draws some of the largest walleye runs in the Midwest every spring. When water temps climb into the low 40s, walleye flood the Maumee in enormous numbers to spawn over the rocky shoals. White bass follow closely behind on a similar thermal trigger, often staging near the river mouth before pushing upriver themselves. Summer shifts fishing back to open-water Erie, where suspended walleye roam offshore, and white bass school aggressively around structure and baitfish concentrations.

For spring Maumee walleye, wading the rocky shallows and casting quarter-ounce jigs tipped with curl-tail grubs or live minnows into the current seams is the standard approach. Work downstream edges of boulders where fish hold out of the main push. As the river drops and clears post-spawn, fish move toward the mouth. Summer Erie walleye respond well to trolled crankbaits and spinner rigs pulled over humps and transition lines between 18 and 30 feet. White bass pile onto breaking baitfish schools and hit small swimbaits and inline spinners retrieved quickly near the surface.
