The upper Salmon River near Stanley runs cold and clear through high mountain terrain, and the fishing shifts dramatically through the year. Resident rainbow and cutthroat trout are the year-round backbone here, feeding actively during summer and early fall when aquatic insect hatches are strongest. As fall arrives, chinook salmon push through on their spawning migration, drawing both anglers and the browns that key on loose salmon eggs drifting downstream. Steelhead follow later into the fall and again in spring, giving dedicated anglers another reason to make the drive into the valley.

Trout and steelhead hold in the predictable seams — tailouts of pools, current edges behind boulders, and the slower water along undercut banks. For trout, dry-fly fishing during caddis and PMD hatches can be exceptional in summer, while nymphing with stonefly or midge patterns produces year-round. Egg patterns and small streamers shine during and after salmon season when browns and steelhead stack up below spawning gravel. Watch water temperature closely — trout feed best in that sweet window between 50 and 65 degrees, and when flows drop and clarity increases, you need to go lighter on tippet and approach with patience.
