Cumberland Sound and the tidal rivers draining into it hold red drum, speckled trout, and flounder year-round, but the fishery shifts noticeably with the seasons. Spring and fall are peak windows when all three species overlap in the same creeks and grass flat edges. Summer pushes speckled trout into deeper, cooler channel water early in the morning, while red drum fan out across shallow flats at first and last light. Flounder stack on bottom structure through summer and concentrate heavily near river mouths in fall as they stage for their offshore migration. Winter slows things down but doesn't shut them off — red drum in particular stay active in deeper bends and warm, dark-water tidal creeks on sunny afternoons.

For tactics, watch your tide windows closely. The last two hours of an outgoing tide pulls baitfish and shrimp off the marsh grass and concentrates predators at creek mouths and channel drops — that is when your best action happens. On incoming tides, push shallow into the grass edges for reds. Speckled trout favor the transition zones between shallow flats and deeper channels, especially over oyster bottom. Flounder sit tight to structure like dock pilings, channel ledges, and shell piles — work slow. Live shrimp is hard to beat for all three species, but DOA shrimp-style soft plastics and gold spoons on the flats produce consistently. When water temps drop into the low 60s, slow your retrieve and fish deeper.
