Seneca Lake runs cold and deep — over 600 feet in the main basin — which makes it prime year-round habitat for lake trout and landlocked salmon. Lakers are the backbone of the fishery, holding near the thermocline in summer and moving shallower as surface temperatures drop in fall. Landlocked salmon favor the upper water column and tend to be most active in spring and again in late fall when temps cool into the low 50s. Smallmouth bass work the rocky shorelines and shale points from late spring through fall, particularly in the northern end where structure concentrates fish.

For lakers, trolling spoons and stick baits on leadcore or downriggers along the depth breaks between 60 and 120 feet covers the most productive summer water. Watch your surface temperature — once it drops below 55 degrees, fish push shallower and jigging tube baits or Swedish Pimples near bottom structure becomes effective. Landlocked salmon respond well to smaller spoons and squids trolled faster and higher in the column. For smallmouth, work rocky shoreline transitions with drop-shot rigs or swimbaits, focusing on where shale meets deeper water.
