The Upper Mississippi pools hold a solid mix of species that shift throughout the year. Walleye are the bread-and-butter fish here, active from early spring through fall and again under ice. Smallmouth bass dominate the rocky wing dam faces and main channel edges in summer, while largemouth push into the warmer, weedy backwater sloughs. Catfish — both channel and flathead — hold in the deeper holes and scour channels year-round, feeding heaviest in warm water. Panfish like crappie and bluegill swarm the flooded timber and lily pad edges of the backwaters each spring, then scatter to deeper structure by midsummer. Chain pickerel lurk in the slower backwater vegetation. Trout can occasionally be found near cold tributary mouths.

Wing dams are your most reliable structure — walleye stack on the downstream face in moderate current, especially when water temps sit between 50 and 65 degrees. Work a jig-and-minnow or bottom bouncer slowly across the gravel lip. When the river runs high and dirty, pull back into the backwaters where catfish and panfish concentrate in slack water near woody debris. For smallmouth, target the rocky, current-swept edges with tube jigs or crawfish-colored crankbaits during summer low-water periods. Watch your gauge readings — rising water pushes fish shallow into the timber; falling water pulls them back to main channel structure. Seasonal timing around the spring spawn and fall cooling moves the biggest fish.
